Frequently Asked Questions
Starting martial arts is usually an exciting time, regardless of age of experience. At the same time there can be some fear of the unknown, so we have put together list of common questions, but at any time if you have a question or concern, please feel free to call and ask us. You can email us at info@balancedlifeskills.com or call 410-263-0050.
The best way is to come in and view a class. Once you have had an opportunity to see an age appropriate class and see how the instructors relate with the students, we would encourage you to speak to one of the staff about our program details. Be sure to talk to the parents sitting around you and see how they feel the program has benefited them.
In fact, especially for children, it is really good for them to experience it first hand by taking part in a class. They will see how much fun it is and how helpful the more experienced students are too. You are welcomed to do this FREE of charge. We will ask you to fill out some informational paperwork first and we appreciate it if you would let us know when you are interested in coming in.
Our schedule is based on two classes per week for all students from the 5/6 Lil' Dragons thru our Adult program. Generally this will be a Mon./Wed. or a Tues./Thurs. The Tiger Tots, 3 and 4 year olds, attend one time per week for a 30 minute class.
We try to maintain comparitively small classes and so unless there are some temporary differences in your schedule we encourage you to stick to your chosen schedule. Of course if you have a conflict we will do everything possible to work with you. We do ask that you confirm any change in schedule with the front desk.
In addition you are always welcomed to attend Open Mat held one time per week at 4:30 on Friday afternoon. If you need more time on the mat you may schedule a private lesson and always encourage you to take 5-10 minutes each day to practice at home.
We start our students at the age of 3.5 in the Tiger Tots class. I believe though that any age is a good age to begin martial arts, especially the way we approach teaching. Our combination of the physical and the mental and character development will have an affect on everyone in the sphere of your influence.
At Balanced Life Skills our enrollment is rolling, so anytime is a great time to start. Make the decision to give it a try today!
You can expect that our instructors have the very best for you in mind. Whether it is you or your child you will find that our students and staff will not only be helpful, but we are teaching our students how to help each other and new students to 'learn the ropes' of the class. Our classes are set up in a way to teach not only the physical skills but other important self defenses and all in a team environment.
Of course we teach physical self defense, but also give the tools to each student, young or older to be confident and have control of themselves. In addition we teach anger management, nutrition, environmental self defense, peace education and leadership. Of all the things that we are most likely to be hurt by it may be ourselves. We feel it is important to supplement everything you are doing as a parent to reinforce good character of each student.
Yes we have classes all year long. We do change our schedule a little in the summer to make it easier for parents / vactations / pool time. Ask the front desk about our summer time schedule or take a look at this years schedule HERE.
The cost of the class depends on if you are attending one time or two times each week. Please check with our staff about the month to month / no long term contract / policy that we have. Mr. Joe beleives that if we are doing our best job and providing great service and helping each of our students - we do not need to have 6 month or year long contracts. We do encourage you to give our classes the best possible chance with your child or yourself. You will see some great changes in a matter of a couple of months.
No, the uniform comes with the initial registration fee.
